Yole :Full Recovery of MEMS Industry by 2025, Market Size to Reach $19.2 Billion by 2030

Source: China Electronic Components Industry Association

According to the latest industry report from Yole Group, global MEMS industry revenue reached $15.4 billion in 2024, a 5% year-on-year increase, primarily driven by the end of the "inventory effect" in Q2. Annual shipments hit 31 billion units, marking a return to "pre-pandemic levels." The industry is expected to see stronger growth in 2025, with the market size projected to reach $19.2 billion by 2030, achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7%, fueled by key end-market trends.

In the consumer electronics sector, new sensor integration in smartphones remains stagnant, but demand for MEMS devices in wearables like TWS earbuds continues to grow. Long-term, AR/VR headsets are anticipated to drive demand for laser beam scanning, inertial sensors, and microphones by 2030. MEMS micro-speakers, with their surface-mount compatibility and dust/water resistance, show strong potential in wearable applications. Rising global concerns about air quality are also expected to boost the adoption of environmental sensors, flow sensors, and pressure sensors in air purifiers, thermostats, and similar products.

The automotive electronics market remained stable in 2023-2024. While the shift toward electrification may temporarily reduce demand for MEMS pressure sensors in pure EVs, ADAS and safety applications will drive growth for motion sensors, microbolometers, and related products. Emerging applications such as battery pack impact detection and parking status monitoring will create opportunities for MEMS inertial sensors.

Industry 4.0 and warehouse automation trends are accelerating, with traditional transport tools gradually being replaced by AGVs and smart factory vehicles. This shift will significantly increase demand for motion sensors, microphones, and ultrasonic sensors. Machine health monitoring is a key application scenario, where inertial sensors and microphones can be deployed for vibration sensing.

The medical market is emerging as a new growth driver for MEMS sensors. The rise of over-the-counter hearing aids will create fresh demand for MEMS microphones, micro-speakers, and motion sensors. Diagnostic ultrasound equipment and handheld care ultrasound probes leveraging CMUT and PMUT technologies will also advance telemedicine.

Global data traffic growth and the AI investment boom are expected to boost demand for optical MEMS and MEMS oscillators in telecom equipment. Compared to traditional solutions, MEMS cooling systems offer advantages in miniaturization and integration.

Geopolitical factors drove growth in the defense and aerospace market in 2024. Drones and missiles requiring precise positioning and antenna stabilization are opening new applications for MEMS technologies.

In terms of competitive landscape, Bosch, STMicroelectronics, and TDK continue to dominate the MEMS sensor market, while Broadcom and Qorvo lead in RF MEMS. Bosch reported $2 billion in revenue for 2024, up 12% year-on-year. The MEMS foundry business remained stable, with a 3.2% growth. The U.S.-China trade war has accelerated the development of China's semiconductor and MEMS ecosystem.

On the technology front, piezoelectric MEMS is gaining traction in PMUT, inkjet print heads, and other applications. The transition to 12-inch MEMS manufacturing remains an industry priority, primarily for easier integration with ICs. Smart sensors are becoming a key trend, with vendors enhancing their value chain positioning through integrated solutions. With continuous technological advancements and sustained market demand, the MEMS industry outlook remains highly promising.
