Product Selection Guide | Murata xEV Power Electronics Solutions
Electric vehicle (xEV) sales are projected to reach approximately 60 million units by 2029, primarily driven by battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR 2022-2029) of 22.5%. As the number of electric vehicles increases, the power electronics technology market is also expanding overall. The main inverter will be the leading application by usage share, followed by DC/DC converters, onboard chargers, and boost converters (Source: *Power Electronics for e-mobility 2023 report, Yole Intelligence, 2023*).
Electric vehicles face numerous challenges, particularly placing higher demands on power electronics technologies, such as:
· Higher efficiency
· Miniaturization (low profile)
· Weight reduction
· Higher power density
· Higher voltage
One solution to address the challenges in power electronics technology is the evolution of power semiconductors. Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semiconductors are widely used in power electronics and have become key components. For example, using SiC power semiconductors in the main inverter offers several benefits:
· Improved Efficiency and Range: SiC power semiconductors significantly reduce power losses compared to silicon IGBT power semiconductors. By using SiC power semiconductors in the main inverter, power consumption in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is expected to decrease by up to 10%.
· Reduced Battery Costs: SiC power semiconductors significantly reduce power losses compared to silicon IGBT power semiconductors. By using SiC power semiconductors in the main inverter, power consumption in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is expected to be reduced by 10%.
· Enhanced Unit Design Flexibility: SiC power semiconductors enable higher switching frequencies compared to silicon IGBT power semiconductors. Using SiC power semiconductors in the main inverter is expected to reduce its volume by 50%, allowing flexible design of the main inverter according to vehicle layout.
While silicon IGBT power semiconductors have been the mainstream choice for main inverters, the adoption of SiC power semiconductors is expected to continue expanding. By 2027, SiC power semiconductors are projected to account for 40% of all battery electric vehicle (BEV) main inverters. SiC's material properties are superior to silicon, enabling high voltage, high temperature, and high-speed operation as a power semiconductor device—this also means that power electronic circuit design for xEVs must address the resulting greater challenges:
· High temperatures
· Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) countermeasures
· Compact package sizes
