The TMP1782 is a linear constant-current LED driver specifically designed for automotive dynamic lighting applications. It integrates 16 channels per chip, with each channel supporting a rated current of up to 200 mA and current accuracy within ±5%. The TMP1782 supports 16-channel independent PWM dimming, with each channel capable of 12-bit PWM dimming and 6-bit analog dimming. The PWM dimming frequency is programmable up to 1 kHz.

The device features a robust, high-speed CAN differential interface. Its DATA+ and DATA- pins support a withstand voltage of up to 20V and a maximum baud rate of 2 Mbit/s, enabling long-distance communication across PCBs. This eliminates the need for an external CAN transceiver at the light board, optimizing the system BOM. A single CAN bus supports cascading up to 16 ICs, allowing the creation of a 256-channel solution.

The TMP1782 incorporates Adaptive Feedback Control (AFC), which reduces system thermal loss and maximizes efficiency. The output voltage of the front-end buck regulator is adjusted in real time to maintain the voltage across each channel at the level set in the register, e.g., 300 mV headroom at 200 mA.

The device demonstrates excellent thermal performance: at an ambient temperature Ta = 25°C and Pd = 3.04W, the temperature rise is only 64.4°C. Test conditions: Ta = 25°C, VP & EN = 6.5V, ISET = 200 mA (3 kΩ), VLED1 ≈ 0.95V, with the TMP1782 mounted on an EVB.

Temperature Rise Performance at Different Pd Levels:

1.     VLED1~16 = 0.625V, ILED = 3.2A, Pd = 0.625V × 3.2A = 2.00W

2.     VLED1~16 = 0.9375V, ILED = 3.2A, Pd = 0.9375V × 3.2A = 3.00W

3.     VLED1~16 = 1.25V, ILED = 3.2A, Pd = 1.25V × 3.2A = 4.00W

The TMP1782 also features Spread Spectrum Frequency Modulation (FSS), with digitally configurable LED current slew rate and inter-channel phase shift. These functions help optimize EMC/EMI performance.

It offers comprehensive diagnostic and protection features, including open/short-circuit detection for LEDs with configurable open-circuit thresholds. The system can select different protection modes (hiccup mode or latch mode) based on requirements. Additional protections include ISET pin open/short-circuit protection, overtemperature warning, and thermal shutdown. In case of a fault, the fault indicator pulls low and sets the corresponding fault register.

The TMP1782 includes a programmable OTP and supports flexible fail-safe configuration via the /FS indicator, aiding in functional safety system design.

The device is available in a Wettable Flank 32-pin QFN package (5mm × 6mm) and is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 certified.
