Title: New Product | Murata’s First Automotive Ceramic Capacitor in 1210 Inch Size, with Rated Voltage of 1.25 kV and Capacitance of 15 nF

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed and started mass production of a multilayer ceramic capacitor for automotive applications. This product is the first of its kind* in the 1210 inch size (3.2 × 2.5 mm), with a rated voltage of 1.25 kV, C0G characteristics, and a capacitance of 15 nF. The capacitor can be used in power supply circuits for onboard chargers (OBC) and high-performance consumer electronic devices, helping to achieve highly efficient power conversion and stable operation under high-voltage conditions. Background

An onboard charger (OBC) is a device installed in electric vehicles (EVs) to charge the vehicle’s battery from an external power source. In the power supply circuits of OBCs and consumer devices, resonant circuits for efficient power conversion and snubber (absorption) circuits for suppressing current and voltage peaks are often included. Since high voltage and high current repeatedly act on these two types of circuits, even slight variations in component performance can lead to reduced efficiency, device heating, and potentially cause malfunctions or failures. Therefore, there is a strong market demand for capacitors that exhibit stable performance under temperature changes, low loss, and high voltage tolerance.

In recent years, switching devices in power supply circuits have been transitioning from Si MOSFETs to SiC MOSFETs, which enable higher efficiency and faster switching. Switching semiconductor devices control the on/off of current at high speeds to achieve voltage and frequency conversion. Si MOSFETs are power control switching devices using silicon semiconductors, mainly used in low to medium withstand voltage applications. SiC MOSFETs are high withstand voltage, high-efficiency power control switching devices using silicon carbide, mainly used in applications exceeding 1.2 kV. They typically require a withstand voltage specification of 1.2 kV, thus increasing the need for capacitors with a rated voltage higher than this level.

In response, Murata has leveraged its proprietary ceramic materials and internal electrode thinning technology to achieve, for the first time, this product in the 1210 inch size with a rated voltage of 1.25 kV, C0G characteristics, and a capacitance of 15 nF. Mass production has already begun. Thanks to the low loss and stable capacitance versus temperature change provided by the C0G characteristics, this product is suitable for resonant circuits and snubber (absorption) circuits.
